This week’s Newies

Shilts the Ex Down to the Bone’s Sax player. He’s got a great new CD out entitled Jigsaw Life
Uber-talented sax man Paul “Shilts” Weimar, at age 15, was part of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Great Britain, backing artists like Nancy Wilson, George Shearing, and Mel Torme. He turned pro at 16, backing the likes of The Temps, Four Tops, Drifters, and Rose Royce. From there, his personal timeline reads like this (I’ll try to be brief!)… David Bowie, Bill Wyman (Stones), Breathe, The Firm, The Brand New Heavies, and, perhaps most familiar to Smooth Jazz fans, “Down to the Bone.’JIGSAW LIFE’ is Shilts’ third solo release, marks his fond farewell from DTTB, and brings him full circle to NuGroove, the label that was DTTB’s first home in the U.S. in 1997.

Jeff Kasiwa from the CD Play
One of the most diverse, in demand sax players in all of contemporary jazz, Jeff Kashiwa finds pure joy at the heart of his increasingly fast-paced touring schedule by reminding himself, every time he gets on stage, that he’s there to do one thing: Play! We’ve recently featured The Sax pack that Jeff is a part of.

This week the show is stacked with Oldies rather than the Myspace/Friends and Moments and Whatnot’s segments.
Here we go…

This week

After that chilled track, lets move on to a group called The Sax Pack, originally featured back in Smooth Groovers Podcast - Season 3 - Episode 17. Its a the Sax Pack from their CD of the same title. The Sax Pack are: Jeff Kashiwa, Kim Waters and Steve Cole. From the Website: http://www.thesaxpack.com we read: For the past 4 years Jeff Kashiwa, Kim Waters and Steve Cole have impressed fans and promoters with an entertaining show that not only featured the personal best of each player, but also illustrated the impact quality musicianship has on a crowd of people. Fans shared satisfied smiles with one another as they waited in line for a trio of autographs and they left the venue with energy to burn. Be sure to check them out, ‘live’ at the Atlanta Smooth Jazz Festival on 27th September 2008.

This week’s Friends section includes:

Marilyn Scott with Every time we say Goodbye

Sometimes we come across a great artist who’s new to us but has been making wonderful music for some time, and we wonder how we could have missed it all these years. Here’s one who writes and sings on the Jazzier side of Jazz, and has made 11 albums so far. We feature the title track of a new album for 2008. NB It is also a very well known Cole Porter song written as long ago as 1944 and sung and played by many singers and musicians over the years, this version is superb, and so is the album.

Praise Age - More Than Emotion
