Just a reminder, you can listen to the Podcast from i-tunes.

Rob Alexander
In what is probably the funkiest episode in our history so far, this is an awesome track by Rob Alexander featuring one of our favourite vibes players.

Roy Ayers - from the CD entitled: Virgin Ubiquity 2
Do you know that Doc has every LP and CD that Roy has produced! In his 40-plus years as a vibraphonist, Roy has produced a string of soul and funk classics, like ‘We Live In Brooklyn Baby’ and ‘Everybody Loves the Sunshine’, that has arguably made him the second-most sampled musician in hip-hop, after James Brown.

Heatwave
Here is a group that was founded by brothers John and Kieth Wilder, their debut album appeared in 1977.

Brian Culbertson (Feat. Chance Howard) From Brian’s latest CD enitled, Bringing back the Funk

Cameo from the CD We all know who we are.

Commodores
Doc’s heard that Lionel Richie will be touring with the Commodores again.

Brothers Johnson
The two Brothers knicknamed ‘Lightnin’ Licks’ and ‘Thunder Thumbs’ are George and Louis Johnson otherwise known as The Brothers Johnson.

James Brown
Probably one of the most sampled tracks in the history of hip hop!

Slave
From one of Prof’s favourite Funk group’s whose songs have repeatedly given him the cardiac dance impetus that keeps him alive and his weight nearly under control !

Maceo Parker
Maceo along with Fred Wesley and others were part of the JB’s - James Brown’s band.

Fatback
The band formed in New York back in 1970. They have produced lots of great funk and soul. This one appeared in the mid 70s.

Rick James
Rick was one of the most popular artists on the Motown label during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Remember the Stone City band too? Anyway, his unofficial title was ‘The King of Punk-Funk’. Did you know that in the 80s he appeared in the ‘A’ team? During this period, he also helped launch the Mary Jane Girls and produced Eddie Murphy’s one hit, ‘Party All the Time’.

We hope you enjoyed this special, closing out Season 3, celebrating our 3rd birthday and looking forward to a fantastic season 4, with a change to the format!

All the best

Dr Groove & Professor Smooth.

Smooth Groovers Podcast - Season 3 - Episode 27 - Penultimate for this Season

Welcome to another exciting Season 3 Episode 27

This week we have no TV theme intro. Instead, we honour Levi Stubbs from the Four Tops who sadly left this world on 17th October 2008.

Just a reminder, you can listen to the Podcast from i-tunes, Podfeed or by clicking on the play button below:

Or, Download here for all MP3 Players

In this week’s Newies we have:

Bradley Leighton with She’s Gone courtesy of the Pacific Coast Jazz Release entitled Soul Collective. Our Personal Thanks to Donna Nichols for this introduction.

Bradley Leighton brings a unique and powerful sound to flute. His style of swing evolved from listening to the big, hi-octane bands of Kenton, Herman and Ferguson in the 60’s-70’s. His funkiness derives from years of listening to Tower of Power, Earth, Wind & Fire, the Brecker Brothers and countless other soul/R&B acts. He brings a fire and flair not usually heard nor expected from a flutist.

Bradley has performed across the US and Asia, as both side man and band leader, for over 25 years. His most recent gigs included opening the Greater Hartford Jazz Festival for Joyce Cooling and Gerald Albright and headlining the Gainesville Jazz Festival. In addition to recording and performing, Bradley Leighton has continued to share his knowledge and enthusiasm of music as a clinician and teacher. Besides private lessons, he leads workshops for musicians of all skill levels, including, ‘Jazz Improvisation for the Classically Trained Flutist,’ and ‘Music For Life - Improvisation for the Adult Amateur Musician.’ He is also a Yahama Performing Artist.

Tom Braxton with Kaanapali Beach courtesy of the Pacific Coast Jazz Release entitled Imagine. Our Personal Thanks to Donna Nichols for this introduction.

This track is Smooth Jazz perfection from start to finish, do check this out his website where you can hear samples of the album, view his previous albums and find links to on line purchases. There are some nice cover versions of old favourites too. You might remember Tom Braxton playing on IP Network’s track called Job Hopper back in season 3 episode 15. Tom lists his great influences, in the senior school its his Dad, saxophonist James Braxton, also Cannonball Adderley,Sonny Stit , John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, and Miles Davis and in the New School: Grover Washington, Kirk Whalum, David Sanborn, Michael Brecker, Jean-Luc Ponty and Steely Dan.

In our Friends section and amazingly in tune (!) with the new bond release we have:
Tape Five with a View to a Kill

This is the new single by TAPE FIVE featuring Iain Mackenzie, from their New album for November 2008 entitled, ‘Swingfood Mood 2nd Edition’, that also contains remixed and remastered material. It is an amazing Jazzed Up cover version of a song originally performed by Duran Duran, from the 1985 film which starred Roger Moore, Christopher Walken, Tanya Roberts, Grace Jones, and Patrick Macnee. It was the fourteenth Bond film and the last of seven to star Roger Moore as James Bond. Find out more about Tape Five from www.myspace.com/tapefive and www.tapefive.com. Also unless you’ve been far too shaken and stirred to notice, a new Bond film is upon us for released in November 2008, entitled, Quantum Of Solace starring Daniel Craig.

There is no moment’s and whatnot’s section this week but our Bring in Back Section includes:

Brenda Russell
Brian Culbertson
Angie Giles
Passport
Rick Braun
- No that is not the Doc playing bass but he wishes he could play like that!
Raul De Souza
and Moby

Until Next time, i.e: The last show for Season 3, enjoy the sounds…

Love Doctor Groove and Professor Smooth.
